Not Just Skin Food: Eat your way to Healthy Teeth and Gums
If you haven’t busted out your Dirty Mouth Toothpowder yet this morning, you’ll definitely want to after reading this!
The American Dental Association lists their Top 9 Foods that Damage Your Teeth that berates chewing on ice, eating excessive citrus, dried fruits or sticky foods (like trail mixes) that can stick to your teeth.
And that doesn’t include beverages. Coffee can both dry out your mouth and stain your teeth. Alcohol can cause dehydration and dry mouth, as well as a reduction in saliva over time.
Now… we all know that scare tactics can only go so far. So what healthy habits can improve your teeth?
Re-Mineralize. Acids in the foods we eat can remove the minerals in our enamel and lead to tooth decay. Remineralizing is when minerals are deposited back into tooth enamel. So, remineralizing’s the goal!
Get some calcium and phosphorous. Perfectly Paleo foods like chicken, leafy greens, and nuts can boost your calcium intake and protect teeth, as well as phosphorous-rich eggs and fish. Raw, grass-fed dairy (milk and cheese if they are in your diet) can neutralize acids in your mouth – an additional bonus. Make eating whole, unrefined foods a habit for your health and your teeth. Crisp apples and pears can sometime “scrape” disrupt plaque on your teeth. These types of fruit also have high levels of water, not just sugar.
Add Vitamin A. Fermented Cod Liver Oil is another at-home remedy for tooth decay. The Paleo Mama shares some great research on her post on cavities and tooth decay that suggests diets lacking in fat-soluble vitamins are the culprit of decay. She offers recommendations like eating high vitamin butter oil daily, using ghee and grass-fed butter in cooking, eating liver regularly, among others.
Mix with Water. If you can’t get to some Dirty Mouth Toothpowder soon after coffee, alcohol or the dried figs you just ate, rinse with water. Try to avoid sipping coffee or snacking all day, as you’ll just be continuously exposing your teeth to risky sugars and stains.
Banish Bacteria. Not many of us think about the level of acid in our mouths each day, but bacteria in our mouth and saliva cause tooth decay. Primal Life Organics toothpowder is naturally minty and made from a blend of clay that is rich in minerals to neutralize acids and remineralize your teeth – like silica, iron, magnesium, calcium, phosphorous and more. Learn more about pH and the active ingredients in Dirty Mouth Toothpowder.

Acne- More Adults Silently Suffer Than You Think!
I know many suffer from acne- I did until I fixed my diet (Paleo), supplementation AND my skincare. Paleo skincare has definitely helped resolve my breakout issues. For more information from Whole9 about acne, causes and treatments, see this great article and video.
The Skintervention Guide by Liz Wolfe, Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, is another great resource that will guide you through the process of healing your gut via foods, supplements and numerous dietary and skincare techniques. Leaky gut, inflammatory foods, hormonal imbalances, food sensitivities and nutritional deficiencies, as well as the toxic ingredients in commercial skincare, can be causes of acne.
Did You Know: Benzoyl Peroxide, widely used in acne products is a toxic ingredient?? The MSDS states benzoyl peroxide is a possible tumor promoter and may act as a mutagen and produce DNA damage (those pregnant should definitely AVOID benzoyl peroxide). It is toxic by inhalation and an irritant to the eyes, skin and respiratory tract. Benzoyl peroxide is also tested on animals!

Benzoyl Peroxide has been linked to cancer for a number of years and many research journal entries state “benzoyl peroxide is a free radical-generating skin tumor promoting agent.” Performing a word search of the words “benzoyl peroxide cancer” in PubMed in the National Library of Medicine produces 102 articles from medical publications dealing with research aspects of BP and cancer. About two-thirds of the research supports linkage between BP and skin cancer.
"In 1995 the FDA changed benzoyl peroxide from a Category I (safe) to a Category III (safety is uncertain) ingredient and stated this action (56 FR 37622) was based on new information that raised a safety concern regarding benzoyl peroxide as a tumor promoter in mice…" Additionally the FDA charged manufacturers with the responsibility of providing this information to consumers so they could make educated decisions. Many manufacturers and product marketers have not provided this information so consumers can be advised of the potential dangers.

Primal Life Organics Welcomes Carrie Perkins Aboard!
I am excited to announce and welcome Carrie Perkins to Primal Life Organics! Business has been increasing daily (thank you!) and I am in desperate need of an assistant to help me with office affairs. Carrie is the perfect candidate. I have known Carrie for almost one year… we see each other almost daily and have become great friends. My husband and I hired her last August to be our nanny for our three young, active, energetic children and she has become a huge part of our family. On Saturday mornings, Mia (almost four) usually will ask “Where’s Carrie today?” I have to remind her that Carrie deserves a day off!
Carrie will be assisting me with inventory, order details and shipping during her nanny “downtime” with daily naps. I was very happy when Carrie enthusiastically agreed to join Primal Life Organics! She has witnessed first hand the process of Primal Life Organics going from a vision to reality. She helped me design our logo and website and has been a great “second opinion” when I need it. Welcome Aboard Carrie!
Here is a little insight form Carrie:
After graduating from the University of Akron last May, I began working for Trina, got married and moved into a little house in a new city. Now after several big life changes, I am very happily employed for Trina, the founder and creator of Primal Life Organics. With so much on her plate, I help Trina out with her 3 beautiful children as their nanny. I was thrilled when she asked me to help out with her business as well.
As a former pole-vaulter for Akron’s track team I graduated with my BS in Exercise Science, and I am always interested in new and different approaches to healthy living. I believe that the paleo lifestyle is much closer to how we were created to live and thrive than the more common practice of eating the foods and using the products that are the cheapest and most convenient to get. I believe in Trina’s vision for Primal Life, and I can vouch for the fact that her products are a great value.
